It’s not the water pump leaking, it’s the timing cover. Which means either the repair will be slightly cheaper or 4x more expensive, and the tech has the coolant bypass hose off of the car which looks like probably more good news since I just replaced that. And my fucking tax return still isn’t here. Everyone I know got theirs within a week but of course I won’t. And my friend is out of town so I can’t get the Miata running for several weeks at least, and it looks like it’ll be a while before the Mustang is running. Fucking awesome.

Have you asked any family members if you could borrow a car?

Family’s all poor as dirt and nobody even has a spare car. My best option right now is an unregistered un-plated missing-title 2001 Ford Explorer sitting on my girlfriend’s mom’s land. Or a motorcycle, which I have never ridden, have no license for, and frankly scares the shit out of me.

Why is coolant coming out of the timing cover?

Good question. I have absolutely no idea and don’t know enough about SOHC 4.0 engines to answer that. Guess we’ll find out when the tech gets the cover off.

as far as I know the only reason why coolant should be leaking from there is a bad headgasket or freeze plug.

Nailed it.

The diagnosis sure seems suspect. Unless you have more than one issue.

I think coolant normally circulates through the timing cover. Looking at pictures of it off there are two enormous coolant passages that open into there. My guess is the seal around the edge of the timing cover has chosen this moment to randomly start leaking. I checked the oil and, while dirty and probably in need of changing, it is free of milky nastiness.

clean oil is sometimes a false-positive for a head gasket, i have had head gasket issues where the engine puked coolant out the side of a head (4200 Vortec) and one where it failed between cylinder 4 and 6 on my monte carlo (gen 1 SBC)
